Angel Star

For Dale Beckstrand, my dad, my mentor, and my angel star . . .

And the angels rejoiced for you on that day
As they welcomed you into the sky.
And heaven grew brighter with love's perfect light
From the twinkling shine in your eye.

A new star among millions, yet lighting the world
With as precious a glow as them all;
Your place is in heaven, with glory revealed,
Where, gently, your family you call.

And I think of you oft, when I look to the sky
With a heart that is heavy and low;
The angels' new angel was once on this Earth
Where you mixed with us humans below.

While still in our midst the sweet shine of your star
Was as bright as the life-giving sun
And now, far removed, your soft light's just as bright
Although separate from us you've become.

So I look to the sky, to your love-giving light
When the world becomes fright'ning and dark,
For a star, like the sun, can give order and light,
Can speak peace to an anguishing heart.

But now it is meet, when I seek out your love
That I search through the heavens some time,
For a star can direct only if one should search
Through the heavens' array of such shine.

When the angels rejoiced for you, on that day,
There were tears pouring out from my heart.
For I wanted you close, but now I have learned
To find peace in the new angel star.
