| Charles Messier (1730-1817) was a comet hunter. While searching for comets, he came across several objects that were "fuzzy" like comets, but did not move the way a comet should. To help ease his search, he made a catalogue of these objects -- so that he and other comet hunters would know to avoid them. It is perhaps ironic that this chart of "nuisances" has become a wealth of jewels for astronomers -- and that he is more famous for their discovery than for the comets that he discovered. |
