On the evening of January 20, 2000, Earth passed directly between the Moon and the Sun. Consequently, instead of a bright, full moon, the moon turned a deep red as the Earth's shadow passed over it. Red light consists of longer wavelengths than the rest of the visible spectrum, so it was able to curve around the Earth to keep the moon visible.
