Although most of the objects we see in the sky with the naked eye belong to our Galaxy, there are clearly areas where we are looking through the plane of the Milky Way, and others where we are looking away from the core. I shot this photograph in a location where there was very little light pollution, on a very clear night, and the Milky Way was prominent. I aimed my camera in the general direction of where the stars were thickest, and got this result. Notice how beautifully the stars vary in color. Our eyes are not sensitive enough to pick up these colors, except in the very brightest stars.

It was only recently that I finally identified what part of the sky I had captured on film. It turns out that Cygnus, the swan, is flying across this picture, as you can see above.
